Jack Points
Jack Points breaks down an MMM to facilitate stakeholder engagement and define preliminary scope boundaries. The technique bridges Jack Semantics and Jack Tree, producing a controlled variety of options and establishing initial traceability.
Purpose: Validate the stakeholder needs and outline the solution scope
Input: Solution-agnostic MMM
Output: List of conversational leads
Output: List of initial Jacks
Mnemonic: SCRUTINISE
Jack Points challenges every word in the MMM, generating hierarchical alternatives that reveal a range of possible interpretations.
Stakeholder involvement is essential at this stage to validate and manage concurrent options, although the technique can progress without it if necessary.
Once scope clarity is achieved, Jack Points are converted into initial Jacks, ensuring the practitioner is prepared for the structural rigour of the Jack Tree. The technique serves to:
- Validate stakeholder input and needs.
- Introduce controlled variety to explore options.
- Establish preliminary boundaries (in-scope vs. out-of-scope).
- Preserve unused options to accommodate shifting priorities.
Like other techniques within the Stackable Jacks Method, Jack Points can operate independently or in conjunction with adjacent components.
