Enumeration
Enumeration is the practice of compacting content by packaging related items into reusable categories.
Value
Enumeration is useful when the same categories recur throughout analysis.
It can provide:
- Compaction — repeated category content is established once rather than recreated.
- Reuse — the same category can be referenced from multiple analytical contexts.
- Consistency — repeated uses originate from the same recognised structure.
- Visibility — the category and its members can be reviewed together.
- Completeness — missing members are easier to identify.
- Maintainability — changes can be made at the source rather than across repeated statements.
Representing Enumeration
To exist within the Jack Tree, Enumeration needs to follow the Jack structure of Verb + Noun.
Within the Jack Tree, a reusable category is represented by an Enumerate Y Jack, with its members represented by Include X child Jacks:
- Enumerate System
- Include CRM
- Include Billing
- Include IAM
- Include Legacy System
Include X introduces a member into the Enumeration.
Enumeration itself remains neutral. It establishes the reusable category and its recognised members without specifying how those members may be functionally used.
Establish Jack Tree Structure
Enumerations need a legitimate and visible place within the Jack Tree.
One practical arrangement is to host different Enumerations under a top-level structural Jack:
- Establish Jack Tree Structure
- Enumerate System
- Include CRM
- Include Billing
- Include IAM
- Include Legacy System
- Enumerate Database Operation
- Include Create
- Include Read
- Include Update
- Include Delete
- Enumerate System
Establish Jack Tree Structure identifies the branch as analytical infrastructure rather than ordinary functional content.
Keeping Enumerations inside the Jack Tree makes reusable structures visible to analysts and stakeholders instead of hiding them in a separate artefact.
Referencing and Using
Once established, an Enumeration can be reused from another position in the Jack Tree by a Reference Injector, marked as [REF]:
- Process Customer Request
- [REF] Enumerate System
The Reference Injector makes the established category and its included members applicable at that position. It does not, by itself, state that any particular member is being functionally employed.
To employ an applicable member, contextualise it with the Use verb:
- Process Customer Request
- [REF] Enumerate System
- Use CRM
The distinction is:
- Include X — introduces X where it has not already been included.
- Use X — employs X where it is already applicable.
Reference Injectors are not specific to Enumeration. The same mechanism can reference other reusable branches of the Jack Tree. See Injectors.
